Happy Days

This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which was published in 1969. I loved this book as a child and have always kept meaning to buy myself a copy. Today I made a visit to the new children's book shop/ cafe: Mr and Mrs Doak's Bumper Bookshop in Hasting's Old Town which is the dearest little place - definitely a must-visit if you're ever in the area. Anyway, my other half treated me to this classic which came with it's very own bag! And that's not the best bit - apparently Erice Carle has never signed any of his books but because of this 40th anniversary, special insert stickers have been created, of which only 100 have been signed - and guess who's a proud owner!

These are a few of my favourite things...

Recently bought a D60 and it makes such a difference I can't tell you. The photographs are so crisp, it's amazing. Anyway, I was inspired to shoot some of the things that inspire me so here's a sample of some of my collection...

Hastings Environment Network Postcard

Got a great brief recently from the Hastings Environment Network (HEN) who wanted to produce a postcard to raise awareness about their network and encourage people to come along for an informal chat.

I like to try and do my bit, and with this brief, it was evermore important to try and be environmentally aware. Using some recycled cereal boxes from my collection of papers/boards, I created a friendly, mini green community to emphasize HEN's support for the local community in green matters. To find out more about HEN, visit www.hastingsenvironment.net

Chic Unique

Just designed some wedding stationery for a lovely couple who have very clear ideas about their wedding theme. The groom, is a talented musician and music plays an important part in the couple's lives. Working together, I helped this soon to be married couple produce something extra special for their big day.

Inspiration from the 50s

A mere glimpse at my recent doings and it's abundantly clear, I have 1950s fever.

I'm designing with 1950s influences, I'm buying 1950s furniture and accessories, I'm writing an essay about the 50s, my hard drive is dominated by Mad Men, (ok, so this series is about the 60s but it still counts).

It'll be interesting to see how my work evolves whilst I bask myself in 50s paraphernalia. I bought some gorgeous old National Geographic mags from the 50s a couple of weeks ago and I've been playing around with illustrations and type that have interested me. In particular I like this little girl I drew and finished with oil pastels. I then drew a model from Style mag but tried to give it a 1950s feel. I'm liking the look and feel but it's still work in progress.

My pride and joy

I've finally got round to framing my most favourite piece yet; my Rob Ryan print I bought from one of the If You Could series last year. It's 34/164 and so precious I can't tell you. Have a read of the words which have kind of become my mantra.
